Should I Take My Cat To The Vet Regularly?

I love it when my friends or co-workers of mine ask ‘Should I Take My Cat To The Vet Regularly?’ Since they know I’ve got two boys of my own (Roger and Doogle) they expect me to be the master of all things cat related. Luckily in this area, I reckon I am. I notice when people meet my cats for the first time, I’m usually complimented on how healthy they look and how good they appear. Well, there is a trick to that and it is as simple as keeping a regular schedule of vet visits. I’m not kidding. That is exactly what I do and here’s why I think you (and my friends) should do the same.

5 Reasons For Regular Visits To The Vet

1. Regular Vet Visits Help With Socialization

As it turns out, as much as Roger (and sometimes Doogle) may resist the whole idea behind seeing their vet regularly, what they may not know is that it does something more for them that isn’t obvious. The fact that each visit presents new smells, different people and experiences, it actually helps them to settle down as they live in my world. The socialization that comes from all of these sensory activations helps my boys to find how they truly fit into my life, my setting and my lifestyle.

2. Identify Health Issues In The Early Stages Of Development

Identify Health Issues In The Early Stages Of Development

As much as I tell people that Roger and Doogle talk to me all the time, one of the things they never say anything about is how they are feeling. It wasn’t long ago when Roger developed an issue with his teeth but he never let on about it. Fortunately the vet caught it in time but cats tend to hide those things and keep them a secret. When you take your cat to a vet, you may be amazed to discover that your cat has been sick or suffering from something that they never shared with you. It’s nothing to do with you, either. It’s a cat thing, really.

3. It Helps To Nip Behavioral Problems In The Butt

It Helps To Nip Behavioral Problems In The Butt

I’ll be the first to say that there is nothing that my two boys do that bothers me. I’ll also say that neither has any kind of habit or issue that could be identified as being connected to the way they behave. But I’m just being a mother cat who doesn’t see scratching the furniture (other then their most loved cat tree) or frequent peeing outside of the litter box as anything other than normal.

However, the reality is that stress and all kinds of outside influences can have an impact on the way your cat behaves. A regular vet visit can catch these things at a point where they can be remedied.

4. Then There’s The Part That Really Bugs Me

Then There’s The Part That Really Bugs Me

One of the really serious reasons why I like to take Roger and Doogle to the vet is for a maintenance check of their flea and parasite prevention program. It isn’t all that pretty but someone has to take care of it and to be perfectly honest with you…I’d rather it was the vet and not me.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my fur babies but I’m not all that keen on the details behind ticks and fleas and anything else that may find a home on or inside one of my cats. That’s why I like going to the vet instead.

5. And Then There’s Emergency Care

And Then There’s Emergency Care

Probably one of the things I haven’t had to worry about (yet) with Roger or Doogle is an emergency of some kind. However, if that was to happen, I know that their vet has the long term history on both cat on file and would have an idea on what may be required to alleviate whatever the situation is. I guess I’m saying that all of us, (cats and myself) would feel more comfortable in an emergency situation knowing that the vet has a history with us and can be of help.

Should I Take My Cat To The Vet Answered!

If you still don’t see the importance behind regular vet checkups let me try to paint a picture for you. I see my doctor and my dentist regularly. Between them I have good health and great oral hygiene. I probably wouldn’t be quite as healthy if I didn’t see either of them on a regular basis. My boys are my babies. They are part of my family and currently happen to be my entire family. I want to spend as much time as I can with them over the next few years.

In order to do that, vet checkups will keep them healthy. So when I do get asked 'should I take my cat to the vet regularly?' I'm sure by now you'll know what my answer will be. Thanks for reading. Jeanie.

Hello! I'm Jeanie and as the name implies I’m absolutely crazy about cats. I have two boys of my own, Roger and Doogle who are both extremely affectionate, love their tummy scratches and have too much energy most days in my opinion. I love all things cat related and really enjoy investigating and trying out all the different types of cat toys, trees and gadgets on my two mischief makers.
